FALLOW DEER
(Dama dama)
|
| |
Origin and History
Fossil evidence shows that Fallow Deer were present before the last Ice Age, were made extinct during it, and were subsequently reintroduced. No one is certain as to when they were reintroduced. Norman records make mention of them leading many to believe that the Norman nobility was responsible for their reintroduction from the end of the eleventh century.

Description
Physical
The coloration of the Fallow Deer ranges from very dark brown, or black to white. The spotted and graduated coat of the Fallow makes it a master of camouflage and gives them the ability to just disappear in woodland. The Fallow Deer runs in a distinctive stiff-legged fashion, bouncing along as if on a pogo stick.
Size
Depending upon sex, the Fallow Deer is 31-38 inches tall and weighs 100-145 lbs. |
