Meyer’s Parrot
Poicephalus meyeri

Description
These little birds are not the best talkers but are talented at mimicking a variety of sounds! These birds are a favorite because of their independent but loving personality. They are also known to have a quiet “voice” in comparison to other parrots.
length: usually about 8.5 inches.
weight: about 120 grams (4 ounces).
lifespan: 25-30 years.

Diet
Always provide your bird with fresh water daily. Vitamin fortified pellets or seed labeled for meyer’s is the recommended staple for these birds. They also eat a variety of sprouts, seeds, nuts, fruits, vegetables, commercial pellets, as well as the same nutritional foods humans eat. Fresh fruits and vegetables such as peas, carrots, tomatoes, apples, and bananas are always a welcome food supplement for your parrot. Items to avoid: avocado, grapefruit, green beans, all forms of cabbage, lemons, plums, raw and green potatoes, rhubarb, and dried fruits that have been treated with sulphur dioxide. Also provide a calcium block or gravel with oyster shell in it in a separate dish.

Be sure to provide a cage with plenty of room for your bird(s) to test their wings. A cage that is approximately 20"x12"x18" (20 inches long, by 12 inches deep, and 18 inches high) is the minimum size recommended for one bird. This is only appropriate as long as the bird has a playpen it can spend most of the day on. A swing is also a good idea, and 2-3 perches of varying sizes and shapes are a definite necessity.

Fascinating Facts
1. Meyer’s originate from central and eastern Africa.
